Overview
Embark on a thrilling adventure to conquer the awe-inspiring Trango Towers, some of the most challenging and visually stunning granite peaks in the world. This expedition takes you to the heart of the Karakoram Range in Pakistan, providing an opportunity to climb the majestic Trango Tower, known for its challenging routes and iconic rock formations.
The Trango Towers are a family of rock towers situated in the Gilgit-Baltistan region, in the northern part of Pakistan. The Towers have some of the world's largest cliffs and offer some of the most challenging big wall climbing opportunities
All of the Trango Towers lie on a ridge, running northwest to southeast, with Trango Glacier to the west and the Dunge Glacier to the east. Great Trango itself is a large massif, with four identifiable summits: Main (6,286 m (20,623 ft)), South or Southwest (6,250 m (20,510 ft)), East (6,231 m (20,443 ft)), and West (6,223 m (20,417 ft)). It is a complex combination of steep snow/ice gullies, steeper rock faces, and vertical to overhanging headwalls, topped by a snowy ridge system.
1977 South Face. Great Trango was first climbed in 1977 by Galen Rowell, John Roskelley, Kim Schmitz, Jim Morrissey, and Dennis Hennek by a route that started from the west side (Trango Glacier), and climbed a combination of ice ramps and gullies with rock faces, finishing on the upper South Face.
Trango (Nameless) Tower was first climbed in 1976 by the British climber Joe Brown , along with Mo Anthoine, Martin Boysen, and Malcolm Howells . There are at least eight separate routes to the summit.
Here are the famous spots you may encounter during a Trango Tower expedition.
- 1-Trango Base Camp: The base camp for Trango Tower provides a staging area for the expedition. From here, climbers can view the iconic granite spires and make final preparations for the ascent.
- 2-Trango Glacier: The trek to Trango Tower involves traversing the Trango Glacier, a stunning ice expanse with panoramic views of the surrounding peaks.
- 3-Advanced Base Camp (ABC): Climbers establish an Advanced Base Camp at a higher altitude, strategically positioned for acclimatization rotations and the eventual ascent.
- 4-Nameless Tower (Trango Tower): The expedition centers around the ascent of Trango Tower itself, also known as Nameless Tower. The towering granite monolith is the primary objective of the climb.
- 5-Eternal Flame Route: The famous climbing route, "Eternal Flame," takes climbers up the striking south face of Trango Tower. It involves a series of technical pitches and challenging sections.
- 6-Trango Monk: Trango Monk is another granite tower in the vicinity, adding to the dramatic scenery. While not the primary objective, it contributes to the overall ambiance of the region.
- 7-Great Trango Tower: The Great Trango Tower, the highest in the Trango Group, is a prominent feature in the landscape and can be seen during various points of the expedition.
- 8-Uli Biaho Tower: Uli Biaho Tower, another notable granite peak, may be visible from certain vantage points during the trek and climb.
- 9-Baltoro Glacier: The return trek often involves traversing the Baltoro Glacier, providing additional stunning views of surrounding peaks and seracs.
